The gastronomy of Skyros
The traditional cuisine of the island is varied and interesting. Boasting fresh ingredients, palatability, nutritional value, quality and the wisdom of recipes handed down from generation to generation.
Skyros is famous for its fresh fish,s eafood and especially lobster. Livestock and dairy products are also known for their quality and taste. Among the best cheese stand out the graviera,the fresh and dry mizithra and finally xinotyri, a delicious soft white cheese made from goat ‘s milk with a slightly sour taste. Traditionnal herbs (thyme, oregano, samphire) are excellent. Honey from thyme, pine or heath has a great nutritional value.
Renowned are also the local pies: The oil pie is made with fluffy dough and is served with local cheese. The “teropitaria”-frumenty, rice and mizithra cheese, the “trahanopites”and cream pies are delicious. Other typical traditional dishes are: ”fava”, asta with lobster ,roast goat with rice or pasta. As for pastry, the local donuts with a whole in the middle have always been the favourite pastry at weddings and christenings.
